Santorini is less obviously a children's destination than some Greek islands, but the volcano crater hike by boat and Perissa's dark volcanic beach give it a distinct character that older kids and teens respond to well. FamiVentura's Santorini guides cover the island's most memorable experiences for families, from the Oia sunset to the black sand beaches and the caldera boat trips.
Perissa's wide organized beach with flat promenade access makes it manageable for the full age range. Come early - the black volcanic sand reaches extreme temperatures by midday, which is a problem for barefoot toddlers and uncomfortable for everyone. The watersports facilities and windsurfing school work for older kids and teens. The shallow morning water is calm enough for the youngest.

Oia Sunset at the Kastro Ruins
The Oia sunset is beautiful and worth doing, but arrive at least 90 minutes early to avoid the crush at the Kastro. Walk the village while it's still quiet - the cave-houses carved into the cliff, the blue-domed churches, the narrow lanes. The ruins sit at the very edge of the caldera rim. For teens: most of the 'ancient-looking' architecture was rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake that leveled most of Oia.
Arrive 90 minutes before sunset for the village walk and a good spot at the Kastro.
The village is most navigable before the sunset crowd converges - explore first, position second.
Ammoudi Bay below is a quieter alternative if the Kastro gets too crowded for the group.
Bring layers for after: the caldera wind picks up once the sun goes down.

Caldera Trail: Fira to Oia
A 10-kilometer caldera rim walk from Fira to Oia, taking 3-4 hours. The midpoint is Imerovigli, where Skaros Rock - a medieval fortress on a narrow sea-surrounded promontory - makes for the best detour on the trail. An afternoon start times the finish for the Oia sunset. Proper footwear and 1.5-2 liters of water per person are not optional; the path has sections of loose volcanic rock and no shade.
