Upper West Side
The Upper West Side feels like a village within Manhattan. Tree-lined Columbus and Amsterdam avenues stretch north, anchored by the monumental American Museum of Natural History (where school kids spend hours mesmerized by dinosaurs) and Lincoln Center for the performing arts. Families cluster densely here, so playgrounds are well-maintained and children's programming is abundant. The blocks between Central Park and the avenues are residential, quiet enough to push a stroller without hearing constant traffic. Restaurants range from casual to upscale, and the neighborhood supports multiple independent bookstores and toy shops. The area skews toward families and young professionals, which means Saturday mornings buzz with stroller traffic around bakeries and cafes. West 81st Street around the museum is tourist-heavy, but move one block away and it feels like a real neighbourhood. Subway access is excellent (multiple lines converge here). It's expensive but feels like home base for families who can afford it.
