The best things to do with kids

Central Park

Central Park is 843 acres with enough variation that every age group finds something useful: playgrounds, woodland trails, open lawns, rowboats, and the occasional free outdoor performance. The south park is the busiest; the North End above 96th Street is largely tourist-free. Strollers work throughout on the main paths.

The ferry route covers both islands. The Statue of Liberty first, then Ellis Island. The Great Hall is the architectural centerpiece. Crown access to the statue requires advance booking months ahead; the 354-step climb is steep and the port windows at the top are small. The pedestal observation is on the standard ticket. Allow 3-4 hours minimum for both islands.

American Museum of Natural History

The AMNH has 45 halls and the only wrong approach is trying to see them all. The blue whale in the Hall of Ocean Life, the dinosaur fossils on the fourth floor, the touchable meteorite, and the Hayden Planetarium show cover the essential experiences. The Rose Center building is worth seeing from outside even if the show isn't on the schedule.
