Get a Mobile Suica before you land
Tokyo's IC card system is the backbone of getting anywhere. With your phone's Suica, you tap the same way at train gates, convenience stores, and vending machines. iPhone users can set up Welcome Suica Mobile before leaving home using an international credit card. Android users need to buy a physical Suica at the airport or Haneda station. The physical card costs 1,000-10,000 yen (500 yen is refundable deposit), can be recharged at any convenience store or station, and works on every train line plus most shops. Don't overthink it, just get it working on day one and save yourself the friction of figuring out tickets.
Tips
- Download the Welcome Suica Mobile app to your iPhone before departure using an international credit card, no Japanese Apple ID needed
- Physical cards are rechargeable at convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart throughout Tokyo
- A Suica works on all train lines (JR, subway, private railways) plus buses, taxis, and shops
