The city stacks a remarkable variety of experiences into a small radius: Table Mountain via cable car, Boulders Beach penguins, and Cape Point all within an easy drive of each other. Woodstock's street art and independent cafes offer a grittier, more local side of the city that feels nothing like the Waterfront. Families with varying ages find it surprisingly easy to calibrate, because the outdoors scales from toddler-friendly beach days to serious teenage hikes. FamiVentura covers Cape Town with guides to its iconic natural landmarks, great food, and excursions that stretch from the Winelands to whale-watching season.
These itineraries are designed to give your family a feel for what the city has to offer when you don't have fixed plans. Think of them as a starting point: swap in your favorite picks from our guides, add that restaurant a friend recommended, or skip a stop to linger somewhere you love.
Day 1
V&A Waterfront and the Sea
A waterfront-focused first day, the V&A Waterfront's seal jetties and open spaces in the morning, the Two Oceans Aquarium for a structured activity, and an easy afternoon at the nearby beaches.
08:30
Breakfast at the V&A Waterfront
food
45 min
The V&A Waterfront has several all-day breakfast cafés with outdoor terrace seating overlooking the harbour. The Baia restaurant's café section or the independent cafés near the Clock Tower are good options, outdoor tables give toddlers a view of the boats, working harbour cranes, and the mountain backdrop while adults settle in with coffee. Cape Town's sky and harbour light in the morning is exceptional and worth arriving for.
09:30
Harbour Seals at Jetty 1
activity
30 min
Walk 5 minutes from café
A colony of Cape fur seals has taken up permanent residence on the floating pontoons at Jetty 1 in the V&A Waterfront, they've been here for years and show no inclination to leave. Watching them from the jetty railing (the seals are within 3–4 metres) is free, takes 20–30 minutes, and is reliably one of the best toddler experiences in Cape Town. The seals bark, argue, flop, scratch, and occasionally slide into the water with surprising elegance. The smell is considerable but accepted as part of the experience.
10:15
Two Oceans Aquarium
activity
90 min
Walk 3 minutes from seal jetty
The Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront is one of the best in Africa, named for Cape Town's position at the junction of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. For toddlers, the touch pools are the main event: shallow tanks where rays, starfish, sea urchins, and anemones can be handled gently with guidance from aquarium staff. The kelp forest tank (a 2.5-million-litre tank with genuine kelp and resident fish) is visually dramatic, a darkened room with floor-to-ceiling glass. Strollers are allowed throughout on wide flat paths. The outdoor viewing area has penguins.

Early Lunch at the Waterfront
food
45 min
Walk 5 minutes within V&A
Lunch at one of the V&A's family-friendly restaurants before heading to the hotel for the nap. The Ferryman's Tavern or Willoughby & Co are both reliable options with outdoor seating. Fish and chips is the Cape Town lunch staple and the right call here, fast, familiar, and the seagulls provide entertainment if you're outside. Aim to be eating by 12:15 to protect the 13:30 nap window.
