An unmarked eastern trail starting from the Roosevelt Way entrance avoids that scene entirely and reaches an equivalent ridge viewpoint through native California scrub habitat, one of the last significant patches of native grassland in the city. Younger kids find the adventure of navigating an unmarked path engaging; older teens can understand the geography from above (the Castro and Mission neighbourhoods visible directly below, the Bay visible to the east) and appreciate that they're walking through rare preserved habitat that almost all urban areas have lost.
