Santa Monica
Santa Monica is what happens when a beach town doesn't apologize for being beautiful. Wide sandy beach, the well-known pier with rides and cafes, and tree-lined residential streets behind that make it walkable. Pico Boulevard and Main Street offer shops and restaurants without the commercialization of Venice. The beach culture here is actually inclusive and welcoming, you'll see local families alongside tourists, and nobody's performing for Instagram. Stroller-friendly paths line the beach, and Muscle Beach is entertaining to watch without requiring participation. The weather is consistently perfect. The catch: it's expensive, and summer crowds are real. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday crush. Parking downtown costs; beach parking is cheaper if you arrive by 9 AM. This is where many LA first-timers stay because it just works, you get beach town life without pretension, good restaurants without attitude, and that reliable California sunshine. It's almost too comfortable, which makes some people feel like they've missed something. They haven't.
