Day 1

Beach, Whale Watching, and Early Evening

Day 1 focuses on the beach in the morning and a whale watching boat trip in the late morning, the timing works well for toddlers who are fresh in the morning and have a nap available at midday.

Most south coast hotels serve generous breakfast buffets with fresh tropical fruit (papaya, mango, pineapple grown on the island), fresh orange juice, and Spanish breakfast staples. Toddler priorities: fresh fruit (papaya especially is very ripe and sweet on the Canaries), yogurt, scrambled eggs, and toast with butter. Gofio, the toasted cereal flour that is the ancient Guanche staple food, now appearing as porridge or incorporated into bread at some hotels, is worth trying; the nutty, slightly smoky flavour is distinctive. Pack snacks and a water bottle for the boat: juice boxes, crackers, mild fruit.

South Coast Beach: Morning Play

The south coast beaches (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje) are gently shelved, have calm Atlantic water in the protected bays, and most have lifeguards. For toddlers: the water is warm (22-24°C), the waves in the sheltered coves are very gentle, and the wide beaches have space for sand play away from the water. Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje is the best beach for families, quieter than Playa de las Américas, cleaner, with good facilities (showers, toilets, sunbeds). Apply SPF 50 before leaving the hotel and reapply after 90 minutes. The morning before the boat trip is the right time for a beach session: toddlers are fresh, the sun is not at its peak yet, and the nap window after the boat trip (12:30-14:00) follows naturally.

Whale Watching Boat: Pilot Whales and Dolphins

The resident short-finned pilot whale population off the western coast of Tenerife is one of the most reliable whale watching destinations in Europe. A 3-hour catamaran trip from Los Cristianos or Los Gigantes marina almost always encounters pilot whales (large black animals, 4-6 metres, surfacing to breathe, resting in groups) and bottlenose dolphins. Toddlers find the marine mammals extraordinary: the scale, the proximity, the sound of breathing. Keep seasickness prevention in mind, the Atlantic swell can make the boat rock noticeably, and toddlers who have never been on a boat can feel it. The catamaran format is more stable than a zodiac; choose a catamaran operator. Bring a carrier for the boat, holding a toddler for 3 hours at the railing is tiring; a carrier on your front lets the toddler see while keeping your hands free.

After the boat trip and a quick lunch at the hotel or marina, the afternoon nap window (14:15–15:45) is well-timed. Toddlers who have had a morning beach session and a 3-hour boat trip are reliably ready for sleep. The hotel room is cool and dark; south coast hotel rooms have good blackout curtains as standard. Pack the afternoon beach bag before the nap to make departure fast after wake-up.
