Day 1

Belém Riverside and Alfama Afternoon

Belém is the most toddler-accessible part of historic Lisbon, flat riverside promenade, the Jardim de Belém playground directly adjacent to the Jerónimos Monastery, and the custard tarts. The morning covers the riverfront and monastery gardens; the afternoon is Alfama by tuk-tuk (avoid the steep walks) and São Jorge Castle grounds.

The pastel de nata (warm custard tart in flaky pastry, dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar) is the single best toddler food experience in Lisbon. At Pastéis de Belém on Rua de Belém they've been making the same recipe since 1837 and the tarts arrive hot from the oven every few minutes throughout the day. For toddlers: hold the tart upright so the custard doesn't spill, apply cinnamon and sugar on top, eat immediately while warm. The interior tiled dining rooms are slightly easier to manage than the outdoor queue. Order three per adult and two per toddler, the size is small and a second one is usually requested.

Jardim de Belém Playground and Riverside Walk

The Jardim de Belém (Belém Garden) directly adjacent to the Jerónimos Monastery has one of the best central Lisbon playgrounds, a substantial wooden climbing structure with slides and swings, set in a well-maintained garden with flat paths. The garden is completely free and is used by local Lisbon families rather than just tourists. From the garden, the Tagus riverside promenade stretches flat in both directions, pushchair-friendly, with the Monument to the Discoveries and the Tower of Belém visible ahead. The combination of playground (30 minutes) and riverside walk (30 minutes to the Tower of Belém and back) is the right Belém morning for toddlers.

Uber back to central Lisbon for an early lunch before the hotel nap. Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto is a neighbourhood restaurant with good simple food, the arroz de frango (chicken rice), the peixe grelhado (grilled fish), and the plain boiled potatoes with olive oil are all accessible for toddlers. Keep the meal brief and aim to be done by 12:30 for the taxi back to the hotel. The toddler nap window is the priority over a long lunch.
