Artis Zoo & Vondelpark

Artis is the right zoo for toddlers: compact, fully paved, with animals that are close. The afternoon moves to Vondelpark's playgrounds for open-space running time. Both are flat and easy to push a stroller through, and the route keeps transit minimal.

A neighbourhood café five minutes' walk from the Artis zoo entrance, with egg dishes, yoghurt bowls, and sandwiches. Arriving here at 8:30 means you walk into Artis by 9:00 before school groups arrive around 10:00. The inside seating is relaxed; there's a small terrace in good weather. Stroller fits through the door and can park at your table. Order for yourselves and something simple for the toddler, plain bread or a croissant is enough before a morning of walking.

Artis is one of Europe's oldest zoos and one of the best for toddlers: compact, fully paved throughout, and designed so animals are visible at lower viewing heights. The gorilla house has floor-to-ceiling viewing glass where toddlers can press their face against and see the troop at eye level. The aquarium in the 1882 building has a long coral reef tank that holds most toddlers for several minutes. The butterfly pavilion (seasonal) lets free-flying tropical species land on you. The zoo is small enough to do in a morning without the point of exhaustion, aim to leave by noon before energy runs out and the lunch crowds arrive.

Walk 3 min back north to Café Koosje after exiting the zoo

Return to Café Koosje or one of the café terraces along Plantage Middenlaan for lunch, this is also the toddler nap window. Order a proper lunch for yourselves and something simple for the toddler (bread, yoghurt, banana from a nearby Albert Heijn supermarket). If the toddler falls asleep in the stroller during or after eating, let them, this is the right time. Keep the stroller moving gently if needed. The Plantage neighbourhood is quiet at this hour, which helps. Aim to be moving again by 14:00.

Vondelpark Playgrounds

Vondelpark's main playground is near the eastern entrance off Stadhouderskade, climbing towers, a sandpit, and a shallow paddling pond that toddlers use in summer. The whole park is flat and stroller-friendly with wide paved paths. After a morning at the zoo, toddlers tend to be happy running freely in open space rather than looking at more structured things. The playground equipment is well-maintained and has lower structures accessible for under-3s alongside the bigger climbing frames. The ice cream kiosk nearby is the afternoon reward.
