Isla Mujeres Beach Day

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is one of the Caribbean's finest toddler beaches: water shallow enough to walk to 20 metres from shore, zero wave action, white sand, and water the colour of pale turquoise glass. The 15-minute ferry crossing is itself an adventure. Return for hotel nap, then afternoon beach at the Hotel Zone lagoon side.

Eat at the hotel early and light, the ferry to Isla Mujeres leaves from Puerto Juárez (20 minutes north) and you want to reach the island by 09:30 before the sand heats up. Fresh fruit (mango, papaya, watermelon), eggs, and toast are the correct toddler breakfast before a beach day. Avoid heavy or greasy food before the ferry crossing, the open Caribbean can be choppy and a full stomach makes the boat less enjoyable.

Taxi from hotel to Puerto Juárez (~20 min)

Taxi from the Hotel Zone to Puerto Juárez ferry terminal takes 15–20 minutes. Buy return tickets at the terminal window (no need to book in advance; ferries run every 30 minutes). The ferry crossing to Isla Mujeres takes 15 minutes on a medium-sized catamaran. Toddlers love the boat: wind, spray, the engine vibration through the deck. Position yourselves on the upper open deck for the full experience. The Caribbean is visible on all sides, on clear mornings the water shifts from dark blue in the channel to pale turquoise as you approach the island's shallow shelf.

Golf cart or taxi from ferry dock to Playa Norte (~10 min)

Playa Norte is one of the finest toddler beaches in the Caribbean. The water entry is a gentle slope of white sand, the depth at 10 metres from shore is knee-height on an adult, wave action is essentially zero (the beach is sheltered by the island's northern spit), and the water temperature is 28°C. Toddlers can walk straight in, fall over, stand up, and splash repeatedly without any danger. The sand is soft and fine, ideal for digging. Set up a beach mat near the water's edge, apply reef-safe sunscreen every 90 minutes, and let your toddler explore freely while you monitor from a beach lounger. This is what Cancún is actually for.

Eat lunch on the Playa Norte beachfront under shade before returning for the nap. The beachfront restaurants serve quesadillas, fish tacos, and grilled chicken, all toddler-reliable. Buho's on the beach has good shade structure and is relaxed about slow service, which suits post-beach lunch with a tired toddler. Order something simple that arrives quickly: quesadilla de queso (plain cheese quesadilla) is universally available and universally accepted by toddlers aged 0–5.
