Get an ICOCA Card for Every Family Member
The ICOCA card is your golden ticket to Osaka's entire train and subway network. You tap in, tap out, and never think about buying individual tickets again. It also works at vending machines, konbini, and most chain restaurants. Kids under 6 ride free, and children 6 to 11 get half-price fares (90 to 190 yen per ride) with a special children's ICOCA, available only at JR ticket counters. Load up 2,000 yen per card to start and top up at any station machine or convenience store.
Tips
- As of 2025, major Osaka train lines including Kintetsu and Hankyu also accept contactless credit cards and Apple Pay directly at the gates, so ICOCA is optional for parents with compatible phones
- Children's ICOCA is valid until March 31 of the year the child turns 12, so get one even for a short trip if your child is between 6 and 11
- You can return ICOCA cards at any JR West station for your 500 yen deposit back (minus a 220 yen fee if balance remains)
