Day 1
Day 1 in Heraklion with a toddler: the Venetian harbour in the early morning (cool, photogenic, cat-populated), a brief museum visit (the Heraklion Archaeological Museum's air conditioning is the midday refuge), and an afternoon beach stop.

The Venetian harbour cafés open at 07:30 and in the early morning the harbour is cool, quiet, and populated by fishing boats unloading and the Heraklion cats sitting on the stone walls. Cretan yogurt with thyme honey and walnuts is the breakfast order, thick sheep's milk yogurt with the dark, herbaceous Cretan honey is one of those combinations where the separate quality of each ingredient is transformed by pairing them. For toddlers, the yogurt alone (without the honey if they're still on plain dairy) is one of the most nutritionally complete and universally accepted toddler foods available at any Mediterranean breakfast table. The harbour cats: most are accustomed to human contact and will approach the breakfast table without aggression, the interaction is generally safe for toddlers who approach slowly rather than grabbing.

Taxi from harbour to Knossos: 20 minutes
Knossos with a toddler requires planning: the site is open and largely unshaded, the paths are uneven, and the reconstructed buildings have coloured frescoes and red pillars that toddlers find visually interesting. The stroller is manageable on the main paved paths between the palace sections; the narrow interior corridors require a carrier or a carried toddler. Keep the Knossos visit to 60 minutes maximum, the essential elements (the throne room with the original throne visible through a glass barrier, the Queen's Megaron with dolphin fresco, the Grand Staircase) can be covered in that time with a young child. Go at 08:30 when the site is cool and the coach tours haven't arrived. The reconstructed red and ochre pillars are the most visually arresting elements for toddlers, the scale and color are immediately readable.

Taxi from Knossos back to Heraklion: 20 minutes
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is air-conditioned to museum standards, a significant practical consideration in Cretan summer when the temperature outside approaches 35°C by 11:00. For toddlers, the museums's objects include several that work at their level: the Minoan pottery with fish and octopus designs (marine motifs that toddlers recognise), the large bronze figures and the gold jewelry (shiny and visually distinctive), and the fresco reproductions on the walls (the blue monkeys fresco and the bull-leaping fresco are colourful and dynamic in a way that toddlers respond to). Keep to 45-60 minutes, more than that and the gallery fatigue outweighs the air conditioning benefit. Exit into the covered market area for a snack before the harbour walk.

Walk from museum to market area: 10 minutes
Any traditional taverna in the central covered market area (1866 Street or the lanes behind the Morosini Fountain) works for a family lunch. For toddlers, the Greek taverna format is ideal: mezedes (small shared dishes) means ordering multiple things and letting the toddler try each without commitment, the bread arrives immediately, and the Greek hospitality toward children means that plain food requests (plain rice, grilled chicken, boiled vegetables with olive oil) are met without difficulty. The dakos for adults is the essential Cretan order: the crusty rusk soaked with tomato juice, topped with fresh white cheese and olive oil. Children who try dakos usually enjoy the tomato-bread combination even if they're unfamiliar with it.
