Rio moves at a pace that suits families: mornings at Copacabana, cable car up Sugar Loaf, and evenings at Confeitaria Colombo, an 1894 belle-epoque cafe that children remember for the mirrors and chandeliers as much as the pastries. The Selaron Stairs in Lapa are the kind of local landmark that manages to be both famous and genuinely atmospheric. Ipanema and Leblon, covered in the Neighbourhoods guide, offer calmer beach alternatives to Copacabana for families watching younger kids. FamiVentura covers Rio with guides to its iconic landmarks, neighborhood food, and day trips along the Costa Verde.
The Morro Dois Irmãos trail starts at the edge of Vidigal and climbs to a summit with 360-degree views over Ipanema, Leblon, the Lagoa, and the Atlantic. At 350 metres of elevation gain over 2.5km return, it's a proper hike — older teens will set the pace, and younger or less experienced kids in the group should be realistic about stamina. The payoff is worth it: this is among the best vantage points in Rio. Go with a local guide from Vidigal Tourism for navigation and context about the community you pass through. Start before 9am for the coolest temperatures.

Hang Gliding from Pedra Bonita
The Pedra Bonita ramp sits at 520 metres above São Conrado, inside the Tijuca forest. Tandem hang gliding from here follows the ridge down to the Pepino beach landing strip — a 7km flight lasting 10 to 15 minutes with the Dois Irmãos peaks, Barra da Tijuca coastline, and the full Atlantic horizon in view. You do nothing except go along for it; the licensed pilot handles the glider entirely. Operators Just Fly and Super Fly both run tandem flights from the ramp. Morning flights have the most consistent thermals. Weight limit is 100kg; minimum age for most operators is 5, but the experience genuinely lands for teenagers. Bring a GoPro or check if rental footage is available.
Morning flights have the most reliable thermal conditions — book the earliest available slot
GoPro mount is typically available; confirm when booking if you want video
Pilots are licensed and experienced — the launch looks alarming, but the actual flight is smooth

Angra dos Reis Island Snorkeling
A full day on the water around the Angra dos Reis archipelago, 90 kilometres south of Rio. The boat tour visits multiple islands and two to three snorkelling spots with clear water and reef fish close to the surface. Kids comfortable swimming in open water will get the most out of it; teens who've snorkelled before will find the visibility notably good compared to most Atlantic sites. Lunch on board, snorkel gear included. Leave early — the anchorages fill by late morning during high season.
